May 11th, 2017. HAMILTON - Imagine a theatre festival that brings mental health to the forefront.  Imagine an opportunity to talk about mental health issues without the fear of stigma or discrimination.  You’ve imagined MindPLAY, Hamilton’s first ever mental health theatre festival.  MindPLAY runs May 26th-28th at the Staircase Café Theatre.

 

MindPLAY is an opportunity for artists to share their stories on stage either under their own name or an alias.  Creative Director of Red Pants Productions, Adam Bryan says “We wanted to create something where you can see a variety of performers come together in a safe space. We wanted to create a supportive environment for everyone.” 

 

Artists and performers between the ages of 25-65 are featured in the first ever MindPLAY festival, which will see ten shows divided into two separate groups.  Group 1 will be performing Friday the 26th at 7 PM, and Saturday the 27th at 1 PM.  Group 1 features the shows “YellowZoned”, “The Kid”, “Stonewalled”, and “The Dark Days.” 

 

Group 2 will be performing Saturday the 27th at 7 PM and Sunday the 28th at 1 PM. Group 2 features “The ADHD Project”, “BorderLine Me”, “Weal of Dysphoria”, “The Pink Elephant” and “Slip, Knit, Purl.”  The poem “The Carving” will appear on the Friday evening and Sunday matinee performances. 

 

Red Pants Productions is a company that specializes in theatre, event and artist services for hire, previously working on big events like Pride at the Pier and the HamilTEN Festival.  The company has previously helped remount Fringe productions like Robin Zee’s BorderLine Me and Alia Ettienne’s YellowZoned.  Previous fundraising efforts include last year’s Stand with Kesha event which raised money for Halton Women’s Place and SACHA, and Adam Bryan’s WRECKED Cabaret, an event taking place the same night as Bryan Adams’ Reckless Anniversary Tour.

MindPLAY is an opportunity for artists to share their stories on stage either under their real name or an alias.  Creative Director of Red Pants Productions, Adam Bryan says “We wanted to create something where you can see a variety of performers coming together in a safe space, whether they feel comfortable in sharing their stories under their own name or choose to use an alias.  We want to create a supportive environment for everyone involved.” 

 

Submissions between 2-40 minutes will be considered for the 3-day festival until March 15th at 11:59 PM EST and can be submitted at redpants.ca/mindplay.  The submission fee is pay what you can, with a suggested application fee of $10.  The application fee is to help offset the costs of the festival, with hopes to return more money from the box office back to the artists.  Fundraising events soon to be announced will include a dance workshop at the Skydragon Centre and a silent auction and performance night.
